“Nights Flights” documented in film

Northcote’s old Uniting Church proved an enticing venue for some of Melbourne’s most enthralling improvisation acts in the depths of winter 2011. Battlesnake, Chottomatte, Peon, the Tony Yap Dance Company, Vijay Thillaimuthu, Sam Price and Sam Keene joined VODNIK for a unique evening, documented by VODNIK’s own Nick Carson and immortalised in a 10min short film…

Review of May 7 Performance

On a colder-than-average early May night at the Builder’s Arms on Gertrude Street in Fitzroy, four distinct acts of improvisation performed for a captivated audience. Following Rod Cooper’s textural performance with his uke-like construction, characterised by a visceral description of a metaphorical “Plastic River”, and Mad Nanna’s supreme vocally-lead short-scale instantaneous compositions, Vodnik drew out three distinct patterns…

1. an interplay between bass, guitar and noisy drum machine, 2. the introduction of Mike Pulesford on drumkit adding a unique rhythmic element prior to the arrival of 3. Vlad exits the audience to offer a burst of energy in the final of the three phases. Vodnik would like to thank Battlesnake for organising the whole affair, on behalf of the audience who enjoyed their close to the evening in utterly enjoyable and precise fashion.

Each of the four acts were featured on a limited edition compilation “A Dead Giveaway” made available to attendees for free. The performance by Vodnik was recorded by Benjamin Woods.

Horse Bazaar Afterthoughts

A gigantic congratulations to Chotto Matte for organising another magical night of sonic landscapes. Peon’s dual drumming and rhythmic effection was backgrounded perfectly by VJ Sam Keene’s delicious visuals, sights and sounds to behold indeed.

Vodnik wound out an hour-long performance as walk-in’s began to descend upon the bazaar, ticking past midnight. The evening’s orchestrators assembled their wares deep within Horse’s Bazaar to bookend what was a immensely enjoyable evening.

Please enjoy these images of Peon and Chotto Matte against Sam Keene’s sparkling visuals…
